How they knew Steve: I met Steve when Keith and I were first in the city in 1981. Steve, Alex and I were all servers at Spring St Bar & Grill and became great friends. Keith sublet his studio (aka 'The Clubhouse") on East 5th Street for awhile. Steve is the one who first dubbed Keith "Mr. Keith" -- a moniker that stayed with him his whole life -- used by me, Keith's son, Charlie, and one of our granddaughters, Stella. We had our first Thanksgiving in NYC with Steve and Alex when Keith and I didn't have 2 nickels to rub together. After the meal, Steve took the turkey out to give to the homeless in the East Village -- that's the kind of guy he was. Had not seen him in many years but will never forget him. The service for him yesterday was so meaningful.
